What is tutoring?

Why is tutoring seen as ‘un-cool’ when it does so much for you?

3-Key takeaways:

  • Tutoring is all about investing in yourself and your future; not just ‘another school’

  • Build on your strengths and see your weakness as an opportunities for growth

  • Be the expert you know you can become

For as long as I could remember, I felt embarrassed to admit to my friends I was going to tutoring. For some reason, it seemed that learning outside of school was ‘un-cool’. This ‘un-cool’ routine would have been my last choice of spending my weekday afternoons or Saturday morning’s, compared to running around for 90-minutes in a soccer game, going to the movies, jamming away on the guitar with my friends in what we assumed would be the next breakout band to come out of Sydney.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the world game, I loved making music and loved remembering the funniest movie quotes to use in conversations, but at the end of the day, was I really investing in myself?

Ironically, there was a lesson to take out of each of the things I love.

Tutoring is socially seen as attending “extra school”; a place where Maths problems and English quotes inundate your conscience. It was a place where your brain would be overloaded with extra information and homework; which was on top of the learning and homework I needed to keep up with at school. That was at least how I saw it.

Looking back on it now, tutoring is more than what it seems to be.

As a soccer player you don’t simply turn up to the game and win. A good player will train with their team and play well on game-day. An exceptional player, however, will train with dedication and consistency both with their team and individually, and then play exceptionally on game-day. The same analogy can be used across all life situations; the common denominators being – self-discipline and a winning mindset.

The other common denominator lies in your willingness to invest in yourself. The ultimate goal in life is to do the best you can do, in any given situation; whether it is on the sporting fields, on a stage, the office or in the classroom.

Think of tutoring as improving YOU. Build on your strengths to become an expert in any subject area. Additionally, find your weaknesses and see them as opportunities for growth. Turn these areas of ‘knowledge’ insecurities into strengths and feel your confidence take over.

In Focus Learning takes the school-feel away from tutoring. All we want to see is you grow in the right direction; a direction you choose to lead. Along the way, you’ll gain subject-competence, expertise and personal confidence that you will carry with you like a habit.

There’s nothing wrong in getting help. Everyone does it! Although this is the kind of help that you’ll never regret. Equip yourself with the skills to become an expert and lead the people around you.
